Why Students do Scratch work?

Do you do a lot of scratch work?

Be aware, if you are doing a lot of scratch work while solving problems. I have seen most of the students are doing a lot of scratch work while solving QA and DI problems. I have seen that most of the students fill all the space left for the rough work. If you provide them with three four extra sheets they do not mind. But do you know that a lot of scratch work takes a lot of time.

Let me take an example of computer and its working.

Have you ever worked on a computer? If you have then have you observed the difference between the speed by which CPU processes a print command and the printer does printing?

The CPU processes the command in less than a second where as the printer takes a full one minute to print a page. Why? Because the CPU processes the command electronically (equivalent to speed of light) and printer prints it mechanically.

The difference lies in electronic processing and mechanical processing.

Now, let us comeback and try to find out that in any way mental calculation on one hand and calculation using pen and paper are related to the analogy drawn above.

We can say that Mental calculation is equivalent to electronic processing and calculation using pen and paper is equivalent to mechanical processing.

My suggestion would be to convert your mechanical processing into electronic processing.
